We know that our feline friends need cat trees and if you’ve got just one cat, the process is pretty simple.

But what if you’ve got a multi-cat household- what cat trees work best for multiple cats?

While there are some things that you’ll want to see in any cat tree, when it comes to supporting multiple cats you’ll need a tree that’s stable and strong enough to support extra weight from several cats. You’ll also want a tree that has multiple paths to the top so cats don’t have to walk over each other to reach their favorite spot. Finally, a great multi-cat tree needs to have plenty of room on platforms, cubbies, beds, and the entire cat tree.

We’re going  to review everything you need to look for along with additional background information but if you just want to see which cat trees made the list you can see my favorites here:

  1. Best Overall: Made4Pets Modern Cat Tree for Large Cat
  2. Runner Up: FEANDREA 67 inches Multi-Level Cat Tree
  3. Best on a Budget: Go Pet Club 62-Inch Cat Tree
  4. High-Flying Premium Pick: Go Pet Club Huge 87.5″ Cat Tree House
  5. Best for Small Spaces: Hey-brother Cat Tree 41.34 Inches
  6. Best for Without Carpet: PAWZ 51 Inch Large Cat Tree
  7. Best for Older Cats: Go Pet Club 72 Inch Cat Tree With Ramps

Before we dig deeper into what makes these cat trees great, let’s learn more about how our territorial cats see the world around them.

Can Cats Share A Cat Tree?

Cats aren’t actually that great at sharing anything- including cat trees. Okay, so maybe you’re thinking about all the times you’ve seen your cats cuddled up together on the couch or maybe on your current cat tree.

The idea here isn’t that cats can’t share but that they aren’t exactly great at it. That’s because cats are naturally territorial and in the wild, they would control large areas of land that they protect from other cats. Of course, everything is a little different in the home and the lines of territory can get pretty blurry.

So instead of one cat taking claim over say the entire second floor, they’re more likely to claim just a corner of the couch. One of your cats may claim the window sill as their own, but the path to get there may belong to another cat and so on.

But it’s not for us humans to figure out the complex rules of feline territory. Instead, we want to make sure there are plenty of resources available so there are no scuffles. And cat trees are definitely resources! So while you can get away with one cat tree for multiple cats, it shouldn’t be the only place in the house that cats can get a nice elevated place to sleep and play.

What To Look For In A Cat Tree For Multiple Cats?

With any cat tree, we of course want to find something that fits in our space and hopefully looks good, too! But when we’re trying to find a cat tree for our multi-cat household there are a few other considerations we need to keep in mind.

Weight Capacity and Stability

More cats means more weight that the cat tree needs to safely support. There’s also the stability factor. One of the many benefits of a cat tree is the chance for exercise and we want to make sure our cat tree can handle several cats playing, jumping, and climbing without getting wobbly or even falling over.

That means we want to see cat trees with a nice wide base or with wall attachments as a standard option (or both).

Platform, Cubby, and Bed Size

With multiple cats sharing the cat tree, we may want to see larger platforms and sleeping areas so cats can share if they want to. Not only will larger platforms give more room for kitty cuddles it’s also important when it comes to preventing kitty conflict.

Path to the Top

We want to find cat trees that have multiple paths to the top so that cats can get to their favorite spot without having to step on or over their feline roommates. This is one of the most important factors to consider! Tall cat trees may have a lot of platforms but if there’s only one path to the top you may have problems even with cats that are usually the best of friends.

After all, no one wants to be stepped on while they’re trying to sunbathe or take an afternoon nap!

Best Cat Trees For Multiple Cats

Now that you’re up to speed on what to look for in a cat tree that will work for several cats, let’s look at our favorites!

Best Overall: Made4Pets Modern Cat Tree for Large Cat

[lasso ref=”amzn-made4pets-modern-cat-tree-for-large-cat-wood-cat-tower-heavy-duty-with-scratch-post-for-indoor-big-cats-51-extra-tall-cat-condo-sturdy-frisco-castle-with-clear-bowl-for-kittens-maine-coon-20lbs” id=”14557″ link_id=”80605″]

Made4 Pets cat tree is a tall tree that will enable your cats to do the things they like the most: Scratch, play, jump, climb, hide, rest, and observe!

This is a 51-inch tall cat tree for multiple cats. It features a modern and elegant design which makes it very suitable for home decoration.

It’s easy to assemble: You’ll just need to follow the manual or the video provided by the manufacturer.

Made4 Pets cat tree is extremely reliable. It has a thick base and a sturdy structure, meaning that your cats can jump freely as much as they like.

It’s also very easy to clean, since the pads are removable and washable.

This cat tree features two large condos, designed for multiple cats to play and rest in.  Furthermore, the round holes and lateral door enable cats to hide. Also, the tree has hanging furry balls and sisal posts for your cats to have fun and entertainment, even when you’re gone.

What I Love About It: This cat tree provides multiple cats with a lot of space to hide, scratch, play, and nap.

What I Wish It Had: According to a customer’s review, the two balls hanging from the strings are easy to tear apart, so, I would be nice if there was some alternative to this feature.

Runner Up: FEANDREA 67 inches Multi-Level Cat Tree

[lasso ref=”amzn-feandrea-67-inch-multi-level-cat-tree-for-large-cats-with-cozy-perches-stable-smoky-gray-upct18g” id=”14832″ link_id=”80606″]

Our runner up is still tall cat 67 inches (170 cm) but isn’t nearly as wide as the best overall pick. So if you’ve got limited floor space but still want to go tall, this might make a great option.

Even without a super-wide base, this cat tree is still stable and comes standard with a wall attachment to give you extra tipping protection. The stability of this tree is also backed up by plenty of Amazon reviews including this one from a happy cat parent that had 8 large kitties on this tree at once!

The platform sizes on this cat tree are large at 13.8″ wide but they aren’t the jumbo-sized platforms we see on some other trees. I’m a big fan of the layout of this tree and they’ve managed to create matching paths without going super wide.

Like our best overall pick, there’s also a ramp on this cat which while not a requirement can be a nice feature to have. Ramps can also serve as great scratching areas and some cats will actually prefer the angle of the ramp over other options.

You can check out more reviews on Amazon and see the latest price by clicking here.

What I Love About It: It has all the features we’re looking for without a super-wide base which makes it a great option if floor space is at a premium.

What I Wish It Had: I’d love to see some extra width on some of the platforms. The ones on the second level are mostly used for navigating and don’t make great napping areas.

Best on a Budget: Go Pet Club 62-Inch Cat Tree

[lasso ref=”amzn-go-pet-club-62-inch-cat-tree-black” id=”14758″ link_id=”80607″]

Our best on a budget pick is a 62-inch cat tree by Go Pet Club. The folks at Go Pet Club consistently make great cat trees at a budget-friendly price so it’s no surprise that they took the best on a budget spot.

This cat tree also has a handful of fun features that we don’t always see- at least not all on the same tree. It has a ladder, basket, hammock, and even an interesting tube that floats below the top platform.

There’s really something for every cat here and I know that my cat Debbie is definitely a tube cat! Baskets and hammocks are also becoming more popular and this cat tree was our best on a budget pick for the best cat trees with baskets and hammocks.

While it doesn’t have the width to support mirrored and matching pathways, this cat tree makes up for it with two huge platforms that give cats plenty of room to navigate around. You can also see this cat tree in action with multiple cats in this photo from an Amazon reviewer. Speaking of reviews, this cat tree has A LOT of them. At last check, there were more than 14,000 five star reviews from happy cat parents.

You can read more reviews and see the latest price on Amazon by clicking here.

What I Love About It: It’s big AND budget-friendly. It’s also packed with a variety of cool features to keep cats interested.

What I Wish It Had: I’d love to see a higher quality hammock on this cat tree. It is our best on a budget pick, but it would be better if this hammock was permanently attached to the cat tree to increase sturdiness rather than just hanging by hooks.

High-Flying Premium Pick: Go Pet Club Huge 87.5″ Cat Tree House

[lasso ref=”amzn-go-pet-club-huge-87-tall-cat-tree-house-climber-furniture-with-swing” id=”14764″ link_id=”80608″]

If you and your cats live by the motto “Go big or go home” then this might be the perfect cat tree for you and as many feline friends as you can legally have you in your home!

But seriously, this cat tree is extremely tall with a height of 87.5″ (221 cm). That’s 7 feet tall and 3.5 inches. To really give you some perspective, consider that this cat tree is taller than Shaquille O’Neal.

It’s also very wide with a 42″ by 23.5″ footprint on the floor. Of course, it needs to be wide to support all that height but it also gives this cat tree a ton of room to add plenty of cubbies, tubes and platforms. This extra-wide base also provides extra stability.

While not every platform is huge, there are enough of them that it’s less critical in this cat tree. There are also 5 cubbies which means cats have plenty of areas to nap in without having to be disturbed by another kitty trying to find the perfect spot. While it’s not perfectly symmetrical, there are mostly matching paths on either side of this cat tree and plenty of routes to the top.

I’m also a big fan of the brand Go Pet Club and they’ve consistently got tons of positive reviews across the internet. While this is certainly a premium cat tree, they also seem to have very reasonable prices on their cat trees, especially when considering the size.

If you’d like to learn more about this cat tree, read reviews, and see the latest price on Amazon you can click here.

What I Love About It: It’s super tall! This is one of the tallest cat trees on the market and you can let the world know that your cat tree is taller than Shaquille O’Neal.

What I Wish It Had: The cat tree is very focused on cubbies rather than platforms. While this is great for some cats, I’d love to see a little more variety.

Best for Small Spaces: Hey-brother Cat Tree 41.34 Inches

[lasso ref=”amzn-hey-brother-cat-tree-with-scratching-board-2-luxury-condos-41-34-inches-cat-tower-with-padded-plush-perch-and-cozy-basket-light-gray-mpj004w” id=”14833″ link_id=”80609″]

This compact cat tree from Hey-brother is a great option for smaller spaces. 41.34″ isn’t huge, at least compared to some of our other multi-cat picks, but it does meet the suggested minimum height of 36 inches.

Hey-brother cat tree provides a perfectly comfortable playground for your cats. This is the place where they can nap, play, hide, and sharpen their claws.

It features dual condos covered with ultra soft plush and a perch hammock. Also, this cat tree has a ramp that works both as a ladder and a scratching board.

This cat tree isn’t large, but it’s very stable and multifunctional. It’s made of high-quality engineered wood and a reinforced base plate.

What I Love About It: The fact that this cat tree is relatively small, but still has everything your cats need is just amazing!

What I Wish It Had: I can’t find anything missing with this option!

Best for Without Carpet: PAWZ 51 Inch Road Modern Cat Tree

[lasso ref=”amzn-pawz-road-large-cat-tree-51-inches-wooden-cat-tower-with-double-condos-large-perchsoft-hammock-and-totally-wrapped-sisal-posts-for-large-indoor-cats-beige” id=”14834″ link_id=”80610″]

This cat tree is a great option for cat parents looking for a modern and aesthetic tree, but one that’s still very comfortable and functional.

It’s covered with a wooden surface rather than with carpeting. The PAWZ cat tree will look clean and slick in any kind of environment.

It features two large condos for your cat to nap in them as much as they like. It also has six level constructions that will definitely satisfy your cats’ desire to climb.

There are also additional features of this cat tree: A jumping platform, lounging perch, and several scratching posts wrapped by sisal.

I believe your cats will have so much fun on this cat tree that you’ll have a hard time getting them down!

The PAWZ cat tree has a heavy and wide base and comes with a removable cover and mats to prevent slipping while your cats play and jump.

What I Love About It: This cat tree is both modern, functional, and awesome for multiple cats. All cat parents looking for a carpet-free cat tree will be thrilled with this option from PAWZ.

What I Wish It Had: A ramp would be a nice addition for older and disabled cats.

Best for Older Cats: Go Pet Club 72 Inch Cat Tree With Ramps

[lasso ref=”amzn-go-pet-club-cat-tree-50w-x-26l-x-72h-beige” id=”14835″ link_id=”80611″]

Go Pet Club shows up on our list again but this time with a 72-inch cat tree featuring two ramps leading more than halfway up the tower. That makes it a great option for older cats that may not want to jump or can’t quite jump the way they used to. While there are many cat trees on the market with ramps, it’s unusual to find a cat tree with two ramps which is what really makes this tall tower stand out.

Using only the ramps (and some climbing over some cubbies), cats can make their way up the majority of this cat tree. That means older cats can still get the joy of heights without the discomfort of jumping.

But your cat doesn’t have to be a senior to enjoy this cat tree! At 72-inches it’s tall enough to keep any age cat interested and it has all the other features we’d want to see in a cat tree including dangling toys, scratching posts, and some extra cozy cubbies.

This cat tree also has the kind of path options we’d want to see in a tree for multiple cats. While ramps represent one path to the (almost) top, cats can also jump on to any of the good-sized platforms to start the climb. There’s also a large platform underneath the ramp that’s not actually connected to anything else. While that’s a bit unusual in the world of cat trees, it actually works perfectly for multiple cats since it gives cats a distinct area to hang out. It’s not the best picture, but you can see exactly how this extra area plays out with multiple cats in this Amazon review.

What I Love About It: There’s a lot to love here but double ramps to the top are probably the most interesting and certainly helps this cat tree stand out. I also like the bottom platform that’s set further back on the tree since it acts as its own little kitty island.

What I Wish It Had: Even though it would take up more room on the floor, I’d love to see the ramps stretched out to make it even easier for older cats to climb.

Closing Thoughts

The cat tree market is BIG. And getting bigger every year!

While that’s great for cats, it can make things confusing for cat parents.

I hope you found exactly what you were looking for and have the perfect set up for you and your feline friends!
