The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a specific method to schedule monthly SSDI and SSI benefits. The payment date is based on a few different factors, such as your birth date, when you started receiving benefits, and the type of disability insurance you have.

Will my SSI check come early in September 2024?
Good news! Your Sept. 2024 SSI check will come early!
September 2024 benefits will be paid on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024
SSI benefits are paid on the 1st of each month, with some exceptions. If the 1st lands on a weekend or federal holiday, payment is sent on the previous business day.
That's exactly what happens in Sept. 2024.
September 1st lands on a weekend, so the September SSI benefit is actually paid on Aug. 30, the previous Friday.
September 2024 does not have an SSI payment since recipients are paid twice in August.
More About Exceptions
There can be payment exceptions if the payment date lands on a weekend or federal holiday.
Federal Holiday Exception: If your SSDI payment date lands on a Federal holiday, benefits will be paid one day earlier.
Weekend Exception: For SSI payments, if the 1st of the month lands on a weekend, the SSI payment will be sent on the Friday before the 1st. This means that sometimes you can receive two SSI payments in the same month (and the next month will be skipped).
Claims Prior to May 1997: Recipients who filed for benefits before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of each month. For this group, the birth date is not used to determine the payment date.
Receiving Both SSDI and SSI: If you are receiving both SSDI and SSI, your SSDI benefit is paid on the 3rd of the month, and your SSI payment is paid on the 1st.

Receiving your benefit payments
Federal law mandates that SSDI and SSI payments are paid electronically. You can choose to receive your benefit payments in one of two ways:
- Direct Deposit
- Direct Express Debit Mastercard
Direct Deposit
Direct deposit is the safest and most convenient way to receive your SSDI or SSI payments. This option sends the money straight to your bank account. You can sign up online at Go Direct, by calling 1-800-333-1795, or by logging in to your mySocialSecurity account and selecting Payment Method. Once set up, the payment is automatically deposited into your account each month, and the money can be used that same day.
Direct Express Debit Card
If you don't have a bank account, you can still get your benefits through the Direct Express debit card. The card lets you access your benefits and use the money to shop, pay bills, or get cash.
The Direct Express card lets you access your benefit payments without needing a bank account. Your federal payment goes right into your card account, and your monthly funds are ready on the same day.
Signing up for the card is easy – just call the Direct Express hotline at 1-800-333-1795. You will need to provide your date of birth, Social Security number, and SSDI/SSI claim number.
How to report a lost or missing payment
Social Security benefits are usually paid on time, but there can be instances when they are late. Delays might occur if you recently applied for benefits, or recently updated your address or banking details.
If you don’t receive your monthly payment, there are a few steps to take.
- First, contact your bank. There may be a delay in posting your payment.
- If you’re on an older plan and still receiving paper checks in the mail, you should allow an extra three days in case the mail is delayed.
- If you still need to report a late or missing Social Security payment, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can also contact your local Social Security office for assistance.
Delays can be caused by SSA staffing shortages or holidays, so it's advised to wait three business days before following up with the SSA. The SSA will review your claim and if the payment has been lost or stolen, don’t worry – it will be replaced.
